- The role involves overseeing and evaluating the day-to-day operations of the Marine Mammal Department, which includes dolphins, sealions, manatees, otters, and the aquarium.
- Another key responsibility is to develop the Marine Mammal staff by providing training in animal management, animal training (operant conditioning), weight and diet management, daily operation of shows, communication, cooperation, collaboration, and problem solving.
- Additionally, assessing the facilities, animal shows, and animal programs is necessary to recommend improvements. Some of these improvements could include creating a new sealion and dolphin show, enhancing facilities, and creating a new animal interaction program.
- The implementation of a communication methodology is necessary to promote teamwork among trainers, encourage the acceptance of constructive criticism through daily exercises such as the “good thing – bad thing” exercise, and provide a platform and protocol for resolving disagreements.
